September is National Childhood Obesity Month. While researching on this subject, I was shocked to realize that our kids will not live as long as we do!!!!!! What?!?! Today’s preteens are expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. That is disturbing, yet not unsurprising, given that 75% of Americans are predicted to be overweight or obese by 2020 (OECD 2010).
The Endomorph or Pear
The pear-or endomorph-comprises the body type characterized by a smaller upper body and more curves or body fat around the hips and upper thighs. The endomorph usually has strong legs and a smaller, less muscular upper body. You will find that most women and some men fall into this body type. While endomorphs may have a more difficult time losing fat, even in the most extreme cases, they can be as fit as other body types.
The Three Body Types: Ectomorph or Banana
The Banana -or the ectomorph-is characterized by higher body fat and often has a difficult time building muscle mass. This body type generally has long limbs, long feet and fingers, and does not gain weight very easily. The ectomorph is usually considered "skinny" and oftentimes too thin. We see many of the running long distance races, which, unfortunately, only enhances their innate body type.
It’s that time of year again! Youth sports are about to begin, school starts in just over a month, and most kids and their associated teams are starting training now! Millions of school-age children nationwide are getting off the couch and walking away from their computer games as they launch into a new season of conditioning workouts… especially football teams.
The apple—or the mesomorph—is characterized by an upside down triangle shape. Think about those “fit” folks we typically see in Southern California.
How do you go about finding the ideal exercise? Do you answer quizzes in your favorite magazines? Do you keep an eye on others doing their thing in the gym? Or do you listen to your best friend and mimic her or his workout? How about the latest crazes? Honestly, have you found anything that has actually worked?
Studies show that up to 95% of women who engage in weight training classes or work out with a personal trainer adhere to a program.
So, you couch potatoes out there! You know who you are! Its time to put down the remote, shut down the computer, stop making excuses! Put on some shoes, any shoes, and hit the road!
